“I love the beautiful shade I got - great quality, beautiful fabric and well made!”

— Jemimah · verified purchaser (Honeysuckle gathered shade) · via Google

The gathered shade is the workhorse of my range. Fabric is drawn up over a PVC ring frame in even pleats, and the excess is absorbed into small, even gathers at the top. When it is done well, the shade looks like one continuous surface. When it is done badly, you can see every seam.

I make these in three families of fabric. The heritage cottons, from Sanderson, Farrow & Ball, and the William Morris archives, carry pattern well because the gathering breaks the print gently. The natural linens are quieter in a room and change colour depending on the light. The mixed silks and specialist textiles I use sparingly, on smaller pieces where the fabric has to earn its price.

Sizes range from 25cm diameter for a compact bedside base up to 45cm for a large ceramic or turned wood base. Every shade uses a standard E27 ring fitter. All of them are fully lined.

If you have a specific base and are not sure what will suit, send me a photo on WhatsApp with a rough height measurement. I answer these every week and I do not mind spending time on it.

All gathered shades ship countrywide via The Courier Guy. Three to seven working days to main centres, up to ten for outlying areas. Free delivery on orders over R3000.

Common Questions

Are your gathered lampshades stiff or soft?

All are hardback. The fabric is worked over a rigid PVC ring frame, so the shape holds cleanly over time and does not slump.

What fabrics do you use?

A mix of heritage cottons from Sanderson, Farrow & Ball, and William Morris archives; South African linens; and mixed silks and specialist textiles for smaller pieces.

Are the shades fully lined?

Yes. Every gathered shade is fully lined. The lining softens the light and adds structure.

What size shade do I need for my base?

A good rule is that the shade should be about two-thirds the height of your base, and at least as wide as the widest point of the base. My lampshade sizing guide covers this in more detail.
