These are the questions we get asked most often. If yours isn’t here, email us at info@enclavedecor.co.za or send a WhatsApp and we’ll help.
Who is Enclave Decor Co., and what do you make?
Enclave Decor is a small studio in Sandton, Johannesburg. We design and make fabric lampshades and turned-wood bobbin lamp bases by hand, and we ship across South Africa. Everything is made to order.
Are your lampshades really handmade?
They are, completely. I cut and gather every shade by hand in our studio, and I bind each one myself. Because it’s all handwork, each shade comes out a little different, which I love.
What are your lamp bases made from?
Our bobbin bases are turned by hand from solid South African Saligna, a local hardwood with a lovely warm grain. You can have yours in one of three finishes: Mistbound, a soft warm grey; Heritage Green; or Emberstone, a deep amber.
Where are you based, and can I visit?
Our studio in Sandton is where we make everything, so it isn’t set up as a shop and we don’t do walk-ins. Most people browse and order through the website. If you’d really like to see pieces in person though, send us a WhatsApp on +27 84 509 5892 and we’ll try to arrange a time.
Do you ship, and where?
Yes, right across South Africa, with The Courier Guy. Once your order leaves us it’s usually 3 to 5 working days to the major centres, with a day or two more for the outlying areas.
How long does an order take?
It depends on the piece. If a shade shows as in stock on the website, we dispatch it within two days of your order. If it’s out of stock, or you’ve asked for something custom, drop us a message and we can usually make a fresh one and have it on its way within about a week, depending on how big the order is. After that it’s the 3 to 5 working days with the courier. We’ll email you the moment your order ships.
Can I commission something custom?
Yes please, this is some of my favourite work. I make shades in a fabric you send me or a colourway of your own, and bobbin bases in custom heights and finishes. Pricing and timing depend on what you’re after, so email me at sales@enclavedecor.co.za or send a WhatsApp with your idea and I’ll come back to you with a quote.
Do you offer trade or designer pricing?
We do, project by project. We love working with interior designers, so send your brief to sales@enclavedecor.co.za or message us on WhatsApp and we’ll get straight back to you.
How do I look after a fabric lampshade?
Give it a gentle dust once a month with a soft brush or a lint roller. If it needs more than that, a barely-damp soft cloth is fine on cotton and linen shades, but do test a hidden spot first. Silk and Sanderson toile shades are best dusted only, nothing wet. Please keep them away from solvents and spray cleaners, and try not to store shades anywhere damp or in direct sun.
What size shade do I need?
A good rule of thumb: the shade wants to be about two-thirds the height of the lamp base, and at least as wide as the widest part of the base. For a bedside lamp that’s usually a 25 to 35cm shade, and for a living-room table lamp more like 35 to 45cm. If you’re unsure, send us a photo of your lamp with rough measurements and we’ll recommend a size.
