My gingham lampshades are made from classic woven checks, cut and bound by hand over a smooth hardback frame. There are four sizes, from a 14cm (height) mini for bedside tables and children’s rooms up to a 27cm (height) large for bigger bases, and every one takes a standard B22 fitter. Gingham is the newest range in my studio, and the simplest. It’s a woven check, cut and bound by hand over a smooth hardback frame. There are no gathers or pleats, just a crisp pattern and a soft, even light.

Checks do something florals don’t. They feel calm. On a bedside lamp a small check reads almost like a plain, and the colour does the talking. There’s a soft bluebell and a warm marigold, and I’ll add more colours as I find cloth I love.

There are four sizes, from a 14cm (height) mini for bedside tables and children’s rooms up to a 27cm (height) large for a full-size ceramic or wooden base. Every shade takes a standard B22 ring fitter.

Are gingham lampshades smooth or gathered?

Smooth. Unlike my gathered range, I work the gingham flat over a rigid hardback frame, so the check stays straight and crisp and the shape holds beautifully over time.

What sizes do gingham shades come in?

There are four sizes, from a 14cm (height) mini up to a 27cm (height) large. The mini suits a compact bedside base, and the large sits comfortably on a full-size ceramic or wooden base.

What lampshade fitter do they take?

A standard BC (B22) ring fitting, the same as all my shades. It suits most bedside, table and floor lamps in South Africa.

What size shade do I need for my base?

A good rule of thumb is that the shade should be about two-thirds the height of your base, and at least as wide as the widest part of it. My lampshade size guide goes into more detail.
