Gathered vs Pleated vs Drum Lampshades: Which Style for Your Room?
The lampshade decision most people do not realise they are making is shape. Everyone focuses on colour and fabric first. But the underlying construction of a shade sets the room’s mood before you get anywhere near a print.
I make gathered shades. I am biased. But let me walk you through the three main options anyway, because the differences actually matter for how a shade lands in a room.
Gathered
Gathered shades are pleated softly and by hand into small, even folds around the top and bottom of the frame. They sit somewhere between formal pleating and a smooth drum.
What they say in a room. Warmth, craft, lived-in elegance. They read as handmade because they are.
Where they work. Bedrooms with mixed textiles, living rooms with layered furniture, dining rooms that lean country modern or farmhouse. The soft folds diffuse light with a bit of texture that a smooth drum cannot give you.
Where they do not. Very modern minimalist spaces, where a smooth drum reads more aligned with the room.
Pleated
Pleated shades have sharp knife-edge folds. Each pleat is defined and formal.
What they say. Classical, traditional, slightly severe. Beautiful in the right space, but they demand a certain kind of room around them.
Where they work. Formal dining rooms, traditional studies, Karoo-style farmhouses, spaces with antique furniture that expect a bit of formality.
Where they do not. Casual spaces or contemporary apartments, where the formality reads as overdressed.
Drum
Drum shades are smooth cylinders. No folds, no gathering.
What they say. Modern, quiet, neutral. They get out of the way and let the base or the room do the talking.
Where they work. Modern apartments, minimalist interiors, any space where you want the lamp to be a quiet background object.
Where they do not. Warm, characterful rooms where a softer shade would carry more of the room’s personality.
The hardback question
Separate from all of that, your shade is either soft or hardback. Soft is fabric stretched over a wire frame. Hardback is fabric bonded to a stiff lining that holds its shape over time.
We make hardback shades. Not just because I prefer them, but because South African humidity is unkind to soft shades. A soft shade can look beautiful when new but lose its shape within a year or two. A hardback shade looks correct for a decade.
So which one
If I had to pick a rule for someone unsure, I would suggest gathered. They are the most forgiving choice. They look intentional in almost any room. They read as handmade, which signals care. That is also why the shades I make are all gathered.
